NYPD and NYC DOT announce 'Warm Weather Weekends' safety campaign

As New Yorkers say goodbye to winter, people around the city are ready to enjoy the out of doors. And as more people move from indoors to outdoors, the NYPD is preparing to keep them safe from the statistical increase in traffic accidents and fatalities that accompany the warmer months. The NYPD and New York City DOT announced Thursday, April 12, that they are launching a "Warm Weather Weekends" campaign to crack down unsafe driving. The campaign was started after the agencies analyzed data collected over 10 years that showed an uptick in traffic injuries and fatalities in the warmer months, WCBS reported. The two agencies said they will work to strengthen traffic enforcement, including adding more highway and city patrols to keep people from speeding and driving recklessly in the hot weather. NYPD said the first campaign will start this weekend as temperatures are expected to reach close to 80 degrees. The Warm Weather Weekend campaign is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's broader Vision Zero program, which aims to get the number of traffic-related injuries and fatalities to zero. Credit: NTD
