House Republicans worked with Democrats to temporarily avert a government shutdown over the weekend. California Gov. Gavin Newsom plans to appoint Laphonza Butler to fill late Sen. Dianne Feinstein's seat. Ms. Butler is a Democratic Party political strategist and former labor union leader. Two scientists received the Nobel Prize in medicine for their pioneering work on mRNA vaccines. Their research led to the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines.
