NCAA President Noncommittal on Athletes Who Identify as Transgender in Women's Sports

New NCAA president Charlie Baker took office this past March, and with it, many hoped the former Republican governor of Massachusetts would reverse whatever rule has allowed biological men to compete in women’s sports and even change in their locker rooms. Mr. Baker mostly danced around the issue when questioned at a Senate hearing by Josh Hawley. “What I will say is we have very specific rules and standards around the safety and security of all our student-athletes, and anyone who host one of our national championships, has to note has to accept that they know what they are and then abide by them accordingly,” Charlie Baker, NCAA President, said. "But and does that include female athletes having to share locker rooms with biological males not being warned or consent? Do they are they asked for their consent?" Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) said. "I don't believe that. I don't believe that policy would be the policy we would use today," Mr. Baker said. One person who apparently wasn't impressed with Baker's response was former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines. Ms. Gaines had previously testified this past summer about not only having to compete against but also change in the same locker room with a biological male, in a tearful testimony. The athlete-turned-activist said on her podcast this week: "The guidelines he mentioned in this week’s Senate Judiciary hearing are no less harmful to women, no less discriminatory to women than those in 2022. Without single-sex competition, there can be no equal athletic opportunity."
