Landmark Hong Kong National Security Trial Opens Two Years After Arrests

It’s Hong Kong’s largest national security law trial since Beijing imposed its sweeping legislation after massive protests in 2019.  The law criminalizes vaguely defined acts of secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign forces. 47 pro-democracy activists were arrested in a raid in January 2021. They were charged with conspiracy to commit subversion for participating in an unofficial primary election organized by democracy supporters in 2020. Some of them have been detained without bail for nearly two years.
