When architect Jack Chen bought his 1970s one-bedroom walk-up apartment, he saw potential and wanted to turn it into a home for himself. With small apartments, the challenge is trying to fit multiple rooms and uses into a restricted floor plan, but Jack employed some strategic thinking with flexible furniture, hidden doors and unusual window placements. As with many one-bedroom apartments in Melbourne, Jack's original apartment had a small, unusable kitchen and he knew this needed the most attention. Gone was the existing kitchen, and in its place was a linear 4m stretch of kitchen, cladded in timber, becoming a focal point in the apartment's interior. But where does Jack eat dinner? Not to worry, a dining table slides out of the wall and clicks into place, providing flexibility to the small space.
