THE PRESA CANARIO

For centuries, farmers on the Canary Islands bred Presa Canarios to use as protection dogs. They also used the hard-working dogs to do jobs around the farm, such as herding sheep and cattle in the windswept fields and hunting various birds and animals in the dense forests.  Some people also used the powerful Presa Canarios in dog fights. Then, in the 1940s, dogfighting was declared illegal. At that point, the Presa Canario fell out of popularity, and by the 1960s, the breed was almost extinct. The only reason that the breed did not go extinct was thanks to a small group of people who came together and formed a society called the Club Español del Presa Canario in 1982.
