Construction work on the line to Scuol-Tarasp commenced in 1909 and was planned to be completed by the end of 1912. Due to difficulties with the longer tunnels, completion was delayed and the line was opened in the June of 1913. The line was originally planned to continue to the Austrian border in Martina and further to Nauders and possibly Landeck. The continuation was not realised due to the outbreak of World War I. After the war the region in question had come under Italian control. The line served as a test track for the newly developed single phase AC power system.
