Australian Politician: Scrap the Belt and Road Initiative Deal

The Epoch Times
The Epoch Times
On June 11, NTDTV interviewed Victoria Shadow Attorney-General of Australia, Edward O'Donohue on some issues, such as the current situation in Hong Kong, the June 4th Tiananmen Square massacre, and Victoria signing the belt and road agreement. O'Donohue said that signing the belt and road agreement brought risks to Australian national security. In October of 2019, the Premier of Victoria, Australia Daniel Andrews, signed a framework agreement with China on the Belt and Road Initiative, which goes against the position of the federal government and security agencies. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison expressed his shock and stated in an interview with Voice of Vietnam Radio on June 11 that the state of Victoria should scrap the Belt and Road Initiative deal because it goes against the country’s national interests. resource U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also warned in May that the United States may cut Australia off from vital intelligence sharing if Victoria's Belt and Road Initiative deal with Beijing threatened its telecommunication security. O'Donohue believes that the Belt and Road Initiative is a political agreement and should not be signed. O'Donohue said: ”You know, there’s no evidence to show it has benefited Victoria. Consideration of security issues, all the concerns of the federal government, the Morrison Government, it was woefully blind to the risks associated with signing the Belt and Road Initiative, and he should never have done it.” On June 9, Victorian Liberal Leader Michael O'Brien said on Facebook that:” Daniel Andrews’ dodgy #BeltandRoad deal with the Chinese Government is a bad deal for Victorians. The deal is also causing tension in multicultural Victoria, with community groups oppressed by actions of the Chinese Communist Party opposed to Daniel Andrews’ deal.” O'Donohue agreed with O’Brien and shared the same post. He said: ”And I support him 100% that the Michael O'Brien government elected at the next election will pull out of the BRI agreement. This year is the 31st anniversary of the June 4th Tiananmen Square massacre. O'Donohue said that commemorating June 4th is very important, and Australia conducts commemorative activities every year. O'Donohue said: “To remember those brave people who lost their lives in the pursuit of democracy and freedom, and to, you know, highlight the importance of standing up for human rights, standing up for freedom, standing up for individual liberty at a time when those important principles are under threat.” The CCP recently passed the Hong Kong National Security Law, further suppressing Hong Kong's autonomy and democracy. O'Donohue thinks that the CCP must respect the Sino-British Joint Statement. O'Donohue said: ”Communist Party should recognize and respect that it’s a deal that was agreed to after exhaustive negotiations, and it served…” O'Donohue hopes to help Hong Kong during difficult times. O'Donohue said: ”We want to work with people in Hong Kong who share similar values to us and help them at this very difficult time.” The CCP has issued warnings for tourism and studying abroad in Australia. In response to the CCP's attack, O'Donohue said Australia is a diverse society and Chinese students are welcomed. O'Donohue said: ”Chinese students I think would say Australia is a welcoming place
