California Becomes First State to Pass Bill That Will Ban Sale of Cosmetics Tested on Animals

Maggie Ren
California might be the first state to ban cosmetics tested on animals, if the governor signs SB 1249. Cosmetic products made or for sale in California couldn’t be tested on animals for any purpose. Penalties include an initial fine of $5,000 and an additional fine of $1,000 for each day. This could have a big impact on the U.S. and the international cosmetic market. Congress is also considering a similar measure called the Humane Cosmetics Act. India, Israel and EU have all taken steps against animal testing to some degree.
