A man tried to steal the Magna Carta, the United Kingdom’s formative government document. The man tried to smash through the glass enclosure protecting the ancient document, with a hammer. The man was arrested and the artifact was not damaged. The Magna Carta, signed in 1215, laid out the rights and responsibilities of nobles and commoners. It is one of the first documents establishing that kings are beholden to the law.
