Auto Workers' Strike: Will Union Demands Make Big 3 Less Competitive?

Some 2,000 workers are now at a standstill at a General Motors plant in Kansas. GM has closed its Fairfax assembly and stamping plant as a result of the week-old UAW strike. The targeted UAW strike at three plants nationwide has had a ripple effect: Since one of the three striking factories supplies Fairfax with parts, there is currently nothing for workers to do there. GM says the workers there won't be eligible for supplemental unemployment benefits either. Both sides are continuing negotiations for a new contract. NTD got an economist's view on how the auto worker strikes will affect the overall competitiveness of the companies, as union workers say they're trying to recoup losses in the form of concessions they made to the automakers during the 2008 recession. Diana Furchtgott-Roth is director of the Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment at The Heritage Foundation, and she joined NTD live to share her analysis.
