VA Voter Site Shut Down Ahead Of Deadline

Kuting Feng
In a tweet, Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax said he’s officially called for Virginia's registration deadline to be extended. The Virginia State Conference of the civil rights organization NAACP (VO: N double A CP) is also calling on the Governor to extend the deadline for 72 hours, once the online voter registration system is restored. The Virginia Department of Elections was alerted this morning by the Virginia Information Technologies Agency, also known as VITA (veeta), that the served fiber optic cable was affecting connectivity for multiple agencies, including the citizen portal and registrar’s offices. And this isn’t the first time technical problems have affected Virginians’ ability to register to vote in the face of a looming deadline. In 2016, a number of Virginian voters weren’t able to register due to an overload in the computer system. And a voter advocacy group sued the state for an extension. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, which filed the 2016 lawsuit, were quick to criticize local officials for the current disruption. Kristen Clarke, executive director of the committee, said in a statement that Virginia election officials “have again failed the public.” Some local Virginians are calling for an investigation into the accident and asking why there was no back up plan for such an emergency. Others are stating they can't help but suspect foul play due to the timing of the accident. Grace Coulter, NTD News New York.
