White House Defends Trump’s Pick For CIA Director

Smira Bouaou
The White House responded to criticism from Capitol Hill related to Gina Haspel, President Donald Trump’s nominee to run the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). According to critics, Haspel was involved in CIA’s now-banned overseas torture program after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, and hence she is unsuitable to serve as the director of the agency. “She's highly qualified, highly recommended, highly respected from both sides of the aisle, particularly within the intelligence community,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said during the press briefing, on March 15. Haspel would be the first female director of the agency, if confirmed.
