Flock of birds block snowy road in eerie moment

Simon Veazey
NEWS COPY - WITH PICTURES AND VIDEO - By Lillie Almond This spooky video shows the surreal moment in which tens of thousands of starlings take over an entire road on a dark and snowy evening. The video which was taken by Andrew Waddison, 37, was captured in the midst of the storm which has been dubbed "the beast from the East." It looks like something from a horror movie as the huge flock of black birds stops traffic by descending down on a country lan. Andrew said: "It was very odd - I was just driving through the snow, on the way back from doing some shopping. "The first thing I noticed was the trees all covered in black - and then I saw the hills and roads were black. "But no, it wasn't scary at all, it was brilliant - it was really incredible. There must have been around 50,000 birds. "There was just me to start with, I drove through the birds slowly at first, then pulled over so that it was safe for me to watch them properly. "I think that where the grit had been washed down the hill, they were eating all the grit which helps their digestive systems. "Also, the nutrients in the salt are good for them and help them build strong egg shells, because it's breeding season around the corner, next month, they would have wanted that." RSPB in the East shared the video on Twitter said: "Has anybody else seen any incredible wildlife behaviour like this during #snowday? @AWPRCO has captured this unusual behaviour in Norfolk - amazing!" They said that the birds could have been looking for food and water, but that they couldn't be sure what had caused the unusual behaviour.
