New proposed laws will make it easier for someone in Scotland to legally identify as a different gender. The Gender Recognition reform bill, which is being voted on today, means a man who wishes to be legally identified as a woman, and vice versa, won’t need a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria to do so. It will also lower the age of applicants from 18 to 16 years old. While the law is expected to pass, opponents have raised concerns.
Sarah Pederson, professor of communication and media at Robert Gordon University, explains more.
