Trump scraps trip&gov shutdown

President Donald Trump has canceled plans for a Christmas vacation in Florida and First Lady Melania Trump is returning to Washington, because of the partial government shutdown that began on Dec. 22. The shutdown is due to an impasse on budget legislation. Trump is requesting funding for a wall on the border with Mexico, [President Donald Trump] "It’s very dangerous out there, drugs are pouring in, human trafficking, so many different problems including gangs like MS13. We don’t want them in the United States. We don’t want them in our country. The only thing that’s going to stop that is great border security." An agreement for the budget of the wall has not been reached in the Senate, and the partial shutdown could potentially continue until next year. 25 percent of the government is impacted. Although most government services are set to run as usual, nine out of the 15 federal departments will either close or reduce operations. Among the affected are the departments of Justice, Commerce, Interior, Agriculture, and Homeland Security. In terms of government programs, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the U.S. postal service, the military, the border patrol, and museums will remain open, among others. However, the Food and Drug Administration and NASA are closed, and the IRS and national parks have limited services due to the partial shutdown.
