7 dead and thousands evacuated in Southern Taiwan floods after days of heavy rain
Flood waters have claimed seven lives and evacuated thousands in Taiwan's southern county, according to government figures. After days of heavy rain in Chiayi County, flooding was seen in 47 areas in 11 townships, inundating houses and submerging vehicles, according to the county's government. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-Wen visited some worst-affected areas on Friday (August 25), and was met with angry residents demanding for some action to elevate their plight. Taiwan Premiere William Lai later led a group of officials to view the latest situations on infrastructure, and apologised on behalf of the government. The heavy rainfall in southern cities of Taiwan was brought by a tropical depression formed over the island the last week. Although the storm has moved away, flood waters have yet to recede in many areas.
