Harvesting Potatoes - Growing Potatoes in Pots (Kind of)

Harvesting Potatoes - Growing Potatoes in Pots (Kind of) It's early August and it's time to harvest my potatoes. They've been in these pots for nearly 120 days... Between the heat, the dying of the foliage and the fact that it's been enough actual growing time, I decided to pull the potatoes out. I grew Russet Potatoes and Yukon Gold Potatoes in 15 gallon containers. I typically direct sow the chitted potatoes in the ground, but I don't have much space and the peppers and tomatoes are taking up a lot of it so I decided to grow in pots this year. I also decided to see what results I'd get with virtually ZERO attending to - no fertilizer, no pest control and relying solely on mother nature for water (with the occasional help from the automatic sprinkler system). A few learnings: I should have regulated the watering as there were very little roots in the pots which tells me the plants starved for water. I should have added some fertilizer at least after the potato plants broke the surface. I should have added a little acidity to the soil to lower the PH since the moisture levels and my soil's natural PH balance is around 6.5 -7.0, and potatoes prefer 5.5 - 6.5 PH, or more acidic soil. Finally, chitting the seed potatoes so that they had larger sprouts seemed to help with the time to harvest BUT I should have removed some of the eyes or broke apart the potatoes for bigger potatoes. To any extent - this was a good learning experience for me. Thanks for watching!
