Police Extort Millions To Settle Cases

Kuting Feng
An audio recording of a police station chief went viral in China earlier this week. According to Chinese online media 微信公众号“两湖法治”发文, this happened to Ye Si, the former legal representative of Wuhan Yuancheng Group. The case was recorded at a police station on May 12th. The report says, police seized two of Yuancheng Group’s legal representatives and froze the company’s funds. The company was forced to suspend its operations. Inventories to a value of $40 million dollars expired, and nearly one thousand people lost their jobs. Police chief Liu repeatedly emphasized that money could settle the case. He originally asked for over seven million dollars. The price finally dropped to around 1-point-5-million dollars. According to the report, similar cases involved sixteen companies and over sixty people. Almost all of them got their cases closed without further charges after they paid the money. U.S.-based former-policeman from Dalian city, Liu Xiaobin, said that it's very common for police to extort money.
