Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on May 24 filed a formal notification with the Federal Election Commission that he is running for president. DeSantis, whose entry into the race has been awaited for months, is expected to publicly announce his candidacy at 6 p.m. on the Twitter social media platform with Elon Musk. Meanwhile, his top rival for the Republican nomination, former President Donald Trump, unleashed a fury of criticism via social media, targeting everything from the governor’s electability to his personality and character. Over on Capitol Hill, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) vented frustration over President Joe Biden’s unwillingness to reduce federal discretionary spending in 2024 in exchange for lifting the debt ceiling. And Biden marked the one year anniversary of the elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, with a memorial event at the White House. Singer Tina Turner died at the age of 83. She was one of the most popular female artists of all time, and was known as the "queen of Rock 'n' Roll."
