And it triggered a wave of reforms, in Eastern Europe, in 1989, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. All of this has been widely reported in the media. But he was later forced, by his political opponents, to resign from his leadership position, and to live in great poverty. So, what was the reason for this? After his death, the Russian people did not have a particularly positive opinion of him either. So, why did the life of a hero, who had changed history, not end well?
