Raccoon Prompts 911 Calls About a Tiger Roaming Washington Heights

New York City police received a number of
911 calls at Thursday morning.
People said they saw a small tiger or similar animal
in Washington Heights.

When the police arrived,
they found a large raccoon.

The raccoon was captured and sent to the Animal
Care Center of New York.
No one was injured.
In New York state law, raccoons sent to
animal care centers must be euthanized.
This is to prevent the spread of rabies.
Raccoons are especially dangerous when infected.
Many states have similar laws in place.
Raccoons are a common sight in the city.
NYC police said they didn’t understand why callers
confused the animal with a tiger.
