CLOSE CALL—Fighter Jet Misses Paragliders by Only Fifty Feet
Paragliding—sailing through the air on a wing-shaped parachute—can be a wonderfully peaceful activity.
Except for that once-in-a lifetime occasion when a military jet buzzes you.
This quartet of UK paragliders were floating over Salisbury Plain about 1,500 feet aloft, when a Royal Navy Hawk T1 fighter blasted past at 345 mph, only fifty feet away.
The fighter pilot was on a practice bombing run. He turned into the sun and couldn’t see the paragliders.
According to a report by the UK Airprox (Air-to-air Proximity) Board, "The paraglider pilot landed immediately afterwards as he was ‘a little shaken’."
