Disney is celebrating 90 years of Mickey Mouse on Sunday, Nov. 18th. The childhood icon made his debut in "Steamboat Willie" on Nov. 18, 1928. Since then, Walt Disney's creation has garnered international fame and is the symbol of the multi-billion brand. Over the last 90 years, numerous Disney theme parks worldwide honor the legacy of the black and white mouse. Mickey Mouse is world famous, appearing on all kinds of merchandise, including clothing, homewares, and food. Created in 1928, Mickey Mouse served as a replacement for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Originally named Mortimer Mouse, Walt Disney's wife Lillian said she hated the name and suggested Mickey. The name has endured through the ages, becoming an integral part of many people's childhoods. By the end of 1928, Mickey Mouse had attained national fame. By 1937, Disney studios produced around 12 short animations featuring the iconic mouse each year. The world was enamored by Mickey. By the 1950s, fame led to theme parks, newspaper comic strips, toys, books and magazines, all opening in his name. He was officially a household name. Mickey Mouse has made appearances in "Fantasia," 1940, and "Get a Horse," 2013, as well as hundreds of other movies, TV shows, and video games. Earlier this month, ABC celebrated the mouse with "Mickey's 90th Spectacular," a two-hour TV event.
