The “610 Office”
On June 10th, 1999, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party created a group for handling the “Falun Gong problem”. That group created what came to be known as the “610 Office”, named for the date of its establishment. Since then, the “610 Office” has overseen China’s nationwide persecution of Falun Gong. The “610 Office” exists above Chinese law. Despite having no legal mandate, it’s been given enormous financial resources. Reuters has compared the “610 Office” to the Nazi Gestapo, or secret police. The “610 Office” has deep ties to the Chinese police, labor camps, state-run media, the court system, schools and universities, and even Chinese Embassies around the world—directing them to carry out the Communist Party’s persecution of Falun Gong. For nearly 18 years, the “610 Office” has been responsible for the mass surveillance, arrest, detention, and torture of millions of Falun Gong practitioners in China. The United States Congress and other members of the international community have repeatedly demanded the Chinese government to put an end to the “610 Office”.
