Criminal Investigation Launched After Plane Rolls Off Runway During Landing in Russia

Authorities in Russia said a criminal investigation was launched after a plane with 91 passengers on board went off the runway at Yakutsk airport in the early hours of October 10. In a statement, the East-Siberian Investigation Department of Transport said the Yakutia airline plane, arriving from Ulan-Ude, rolled off the runway at around 3.20 am as it attempted the land in Yakutsk. The plane’s 91 passengers and five crew were evacuated using emergency exits, with four passengers requiring medical assistance, the statement said. Local media reported that the plane landed in adverse weather conditions, with ice on the runway. Authorities said they had launched a criminal investigation into damage caused by possible negligence and violation of the rules of traffic safety and operation of air transport.
