Baby Born to Vegetative Woman Who Was Raped Nearly Died: Police
Authorities in Phoenix are investigating the sexual assault of a woman who has been in a vegetative state for years at a long-term care facility after the patient suddenly gave birth to a child. Police said they were called to the Hacienda HealthCare facility on Dec. 29 after a report of a child in distress. Upon arrival, they discovered the child and the woman in her 20s, who had just given birth, needed medical attention. Both were taken to a nearby hospital and are recovering, said Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson. "This woman was unable to move. She was unable to communicate. In other words, she was helpless and incapacitated," Thompson said during a news conference on Wednesday. He said the department's sex crimes unit is investigating the case as a sexual assault, and that according to the facility, no one there knew the woman was pregnant until she gave birth. A spokesman for Hacienda HealthCare said investigators obtained DNA samples from all male staffers there as they pursue leads for a suspect. The Hacienda facility serves infants, children and young adults who are "medically fragile" or have developmental disabilities, according to its website.
