In India, violent protests broke out across several cities over a new military recruitment process announced by the country's prime minister. The new scheme would hire soldiers on a shorter, fixed term, after which only a fraction of them will be retained. The goal is to cut the army's expenditure on salaries and pensions, which account for more than half of its budget, and free up funds to modernize the forces. But protesters say the new plan will reduce their chances of getting coveted permanent military jobs, which offer prestige, a regular income, and even a way out of poverty for many young people.
