Citizen Voice - 'True U.S. History' with Dennis Jamison | Episode 11 on 5/10/21 - This week’s episode continues the coverage of the Jamestown settlement. One of the key points made in episode 9 was that while various interests drove the effort to colonize this area of what soon became a more expansive Virginia Colony, a missed fact is that the colony was initiated as a venture capitalist type of wealth-developing enterprise. The episode goes into the economic realities - especially the hardships brought on by failure to grow crops and tension with the Indian population. The Virginia Company was the controlling “government” of the locally determined Council of Leaders. But, what happened across the ocean was loosely interpreted and one outstanding leader that truly emerged to help the colony survive was Captain John Smith. He literally risked his life time and again to keep the colony intact. There is also an exploration of the Indian people and Chief Powhatan, whose real name was Wahunsenacawh, and his effort to kill John Smith. Pocahontas is brought up because the episode of her saving Smith was factual. The notion of a romance between her and Smith is contrived. Pocahontas is viewed as a central personage in helping to manifest a fragile peace between the two cultures.
