The proposed Amendment 1 to the Illinois state constitution, if approved, would help union workers keep their memberships and protect benefits if they are employed by state or local governments. But it’s unclear if the amendment will ultimately cede power from residents who elect officials to make laws and hand it over to the unions. NTD spoke to Kathleen Murray, a Republican nominee for Illinois Senate, District 21. Murray said that the amendment would give unions the power to override state laws by putting provisions in their contracts.
