Border Lines (Part 2): How Mexican Cartels Use Immigrants as a Decoy For Transnational Crime

Life and Times
Life and Times
Why are so many people willing to risk everything to cross the border into the US. The freedom and safety we have here that we often take for granted is one reason the wish for a higher standard of living is also another. We're here in Hidalgo, Texas, and you can literally see the US border right here and part of the border wall behind me. On this side of the fence, residents come here to enjoy the scenery, and to appreciate nature. This freedom is part of the American dream that people are willing to pay any price for to cross the border and enjoy. Of course, not every city on this side of the border is as ideally has this beautiful location. But from this vantage point, the contrast couldn't be more clear. Some say there’s a crisis at the southern border of the United States, some say illegal immigration is out of control, and others fear drug or human smuggling. Some say there’s no problem at all. So what is happening at the border? We decided to go there and see it for ourselves. Hosted by award-winning documentary filmmaker and author Kay Rubacek, Life & Times travels the nation to bring you the hopeful stories behind the biggest news of today.
