Father Shares What Trump Did For Him After He Lost His Son to Opioids

President Donald Trump shared an emotional moment with an old friend at the tail end of a summit on the opiod crisis at the White House on Thursday. The attendees included relatives of people who lost their lives in the opioid epidemic, high-ranking officials and health professionals. When Trump took the stage at the end of the summit he recognized an old friend in the crowd. Trump said he was great friends with Witkoff over the years and invited him to share his story on stage. Steven Witkoff, a real estate developer in New York, lost his son to opioids. Witkoff met Trump during the dark days following his son's death. "I remember the hug you gave me when the world was — when I felt all was lost, Witkoff said. "I lost my son in 2011." "I always felt hopeless before you were elected," he continued. "And I’ve never lobbied my friend about anything. I’ve just supported you because I so believe in you. But if my son knew that you were going to take up this battle — oh, my gosh, he must be upstairs applauding every single day. So I am so grateful" Witkoff son, Andrew, died of an OxyContin overdose at a rehabilitation facility in 2011.
