Spanish rescuers to drill for boy trapped in well

2019-01-19 15:14
Rescue workers continued their work on Saturday (January 19) to reach a two-year-old boy who has been trapped in a deep well in southern Spain for nearly a week. The drilling of a first tunnel to reach two year-old Julen was expected to start on Friday night but was delayed because of weather and ground conditions. Rescue services are hoping to start the drilling on Saturday. It will take them nearly 15 hours to complete. A second tunnel is also being planned after rescuers erected a platform to remove earth and debris. The child fell into the well, which is just 25 cm (10 inches) wide and 100 metres (yards) deep, as his family walked through a private estate in Totalan, Malaga on Sunday (January 13). Officials said on Friday they were hoping to find the boy alive, but the operation would take at least a few days. The case has gripped the whole nation. Media reports said Julen's parents had lost another three-year-old son in 2017 when he died suddenly while walking along a beach not far from Totalan.
