Conviction for Driver Who Went Over Twice the Speed Limit as Police Chased

A 24-year-old who drove through multiple red lights, mounted the pavement and drove on the wrong side of the road in a high-speed chase with police in Bridgwater, Somerset, was sentenced at Taunton Crown Court on February 9. Callum James Molloy first caught the attention of officers on the M5, where he was driving at 96 mph on a stretch of motorway that had a 40 mph limit due to roadworks. He drove into Bridgwater after ignoring police requests to stop and drove through a 30 mph zone in the town at 75 mph. The footage shows him eventually abandoning the car and attempting to escape on foot. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving with no insurance, and was given a 20-month suspended sentence and banned from driving for two years. He was also ordered to do community service and pay court costs. Speaking of Molloy’s recklessness, the arresting officer said, “Towards the end of the incident he was continuing to drive despite the vehicle suffering two blown tyres."
