Interview of migrant (spanish) - migrant 3
Ms. Ana Lidia Cruz, 38, from Tocoa City, Colon Department, Honduras Why did you leave your country? -Because of so much poverty, lack of jobs. There are no jobs in the country we live in, things are very expensive, you don’t earn a lot and things are very expensive, the electricity, everything, and it’s not even enough to get kids to study. Did Mexico offer you asylum? -Yes, Mexico offered asylum, we were very well treated in Mexico. Only here, where we are, here in Tijuana, it’s a little bit awful for us. But we were very well treated in other places, way back they treated us excellent. Did you accept Mexico’s asylum? -No, I didn’t. Because when I left Honduras, our goal was America, the US, so I’d like [asylum] in the US, or maybe other countries, other nations, right? It would be good if they supported us, if they could give us support, that would be good. But why not Mexico? -I don’t know, but not. Here where we are, we’ve seen mistreatment. What are your plans if you get to the US? -To work, to provide for my family, because I’m mother and father of 4 kids. Are they here with you? -I only brought one. And the other 3 are in Honduras? -No, I have 2 here, in the US, that’s why I’d like to be in the US, I have two minors in the US. And why Tijuana, and not another city in the border with Texas, which is closer? -I don’t know, because everyone headed here, and as we were in the caravan, we headed here. Why are there different caravans? Did they leave at different times? -I don’t know about that. I’m not aware of another caravan. I only know this is the second one. But the other one left around 6-7 months ago, I don’t know. Did you go to San Ysidro to seek asylum in the US? -There, in the line? Yes, I went there. I went there for asylum and was given a number. What is your number? -It was a high… a thousand something. So you are waiting to be called to start the process? -Well, we are, like they say, it’s like one has to pass the test. But they say that the president Donald Trump won’t allow people with criminal records to enter the country, and as I’m a humble person and never liked to get in troubles, I feel clean of any trouble. How did you know about the caravan? -In the news. When there was a caravan that had departed from San Pedro Sula, in Honduras, it was San Pedro Sula where the caravan departed from. I heard it in the news and that’s how I decided to come in the caravan. How old is the daughter here with you? -14. I came with 2. I have a girl, her. She is 12 and the boy is 14.
