Embattled Long Island Railroad President
Patrick Nowakowski resigned on April 11.
The State Comptroller’s Office opened an
investigation in March this year.
The state report found that LIRR delays
in 2017 cost riders millions of dollars.
LIRR’s on-time rate was at its lowest level
in nearly 18 years.
In 2017, 21,400 Long Island trains were
delayed or canceled.
That was an increase of 20% from 2016 and
cost riders roughly $75 million.
The LIRR is one of the most important public
transportation links between Long Island
and New York City.
According to MTA data, the number of Long Island
commuters reached 89 million passengers
between 2011 and 2016.
