Ossetian Family 'Adopts' Rescued Bear Cub
An Ossetian huntsman described on Friday, June 1, how he had discovered a baby bear and taken it home to become part of his family. Lavrentiy Pliev spoke to Ruptly reporters at the Balta settlement in the Znaursky district of Ossetia. “One of the guys went to the forest with his dogs and found these baby bears,” Pliev explained. “They lived in a huge linden hollow. The dogs smelled the animals and started jumping up the tree trying to reach the hollow. The female bear was scared and ran away. It is really strange she lived so close to the village. Usually bears choose places that are much further away.” After finding the two baby bears, Pliev brought them home to look after them. Sadly, one of the bears died soon after. The second cub is now around five months old. It is healthy and reportedly lives off milk, jam and semolina pudding. The baby bear also plays with his children. “It was scary at the beginning, I felt pity for them,” said Tamila Gabaraeva, Lavrentiy’s wife. She said that they have welcomed the bear into their family and sayis it’s “like our fourth child.” Pliev says that when the cub is older, he plans to take it to a conservancy or a zoo.
