Fire Department Helps Students Commemorate Prom Night Despite Blizzard

Celeste Li
A record-setting blizzard hit Minnesota, ruining prom night at Forest Lake High School. But local firefighters stepped up and hosted the prom goers at their fire station. “The teens seemed really excited to have their pictures taken next to the fire trucks,” said Jill Graven, wife of a Forest Lake firefighter. Over 200 high schoolers came to have their pictures taken. And soon, #BlizzardProm popped up on social media. “It was pretty cool to see so many of the firefighters volunteer their time with just an hours notice shoveling, plowing, and opening their doors for all the kiddos!” said Alyssa Thomas, another firefighter’s wife, who came up with the fire station idea. Fire station prom may even become a tradition. “Parents couldn’t thank us enough for the hospitality,” Graven said. “We’ve been asked to do it every year now!” Credit: Jill Graven, Alyssa Thomas, Forest Lake Fire & Rescue
