New York State Parks to Hire 1,000 Lifeguards

Aric Chen
The beaches and swimming pools of New York State Parks welcome more than 25 million swimmers every year. And with the summer season approaching, the NYS Recreation and Historic Preservation Department is hiring more than 1,000 lifeguards to ensure swimmers are safe while they enjoy their swims. Candidates are required to obtain several certifications from the American Red Cross, including courses in lifeguarding and CPR. Applicants outside of Long Island must be at least 16 years of age, while applicants in Long Island must be a little older, 17 years of age, to apply. People applying for the first time must pass an initial interview before being considered. According to NYS Parks' statistics found on their website, lifeguards rescue around 4,000 swimmers from drowning every year. More information about the recruitment can be found on their website.
