UK prosecutors drop charges against ex-police chief over Hillsborough crush

A former police chief no longer faces charges over the 1989 Hillsborough stadium crush that killed 96. Prosecutors announced charges of misconduct against Norman Bettison had been dropped. Prosecutors said that there was no longer enough evidence for a “realistic prospect of conviction.” Families of victims and survivors have always rejected the police’s official version of events. An inquest verdict of “unlawful killing” in 2016 prompted a series of prosecutions.
