LAST MAY, 26-YEAR-OLD ADRIAN MIDDLETON WENT SHOPPING FOR CLOTHES AT THE FAMILY THRIFT CENTER AND THE TWELVE HUNDRED BLOCK OF THE EAST FREEWAY. HE REPORTEDLY TOLD POLICE HE LEFT HIS SIX-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER AND ONE-YEAR-OLD SON IN THE CAR, WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER ON AND A MOVIE PLAYING. AFTER GIVING THEM CHEETOS AND WATER, HE WENT SHOPPING. HIS SIX-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER REPORTEDLY TOLD POLICE SHE WRAPPED A SEAT BELT AROUND HER ONE-YEAR-OLD BABY BROTHER'S NECK TO STOP HIM FROM CRYING. ACCORDING TO COURT DOCUMENTS, MIDDLETON FIRST TOLD POLICE HIS ONE-YEAR-OLD SON AND SIX-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER WERE STRAPPED IN THEIR CAR SEATS. BUT LATER, IN A SECOND STATEMENT, HE ADMITTED THERE WERE NO CAR SEATS. THE DOCUMENTS ALSO SAY MIDDLETON TOLD POLICE HE WAS IN THE STORE FOR 30 TO 45 MINUTES. BUT POLICE VIEWED STORE SURVEILLANCE VIDEO AND SAY MIDDLETON CAN BE SEEN ENTERING THE STORE AT 10:35 AM AND LEAVING AT APPROXIMATELY 12:15. OFFICERS SAY THAT MEANS MIDDLETON WAS IN THE STORE FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR AND 40 MINUTES WITHOUT CHECKING ON HIS TWO CHILDREN. PROSECUTORS SAY THIS CASE ILLUSTRATES HOW CHILDREN SHOULD NEVER BE LEFT IN A VEHICLE UNATTENDED, NOT EVEN FOR ONE MINUTE.
