Ocean Waves Explode Into 'Tephra Jets' as They Hit Molten Lava

2018-06-12 10:46
Lava from Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano continued to flow into the Pacific Ocean on June 11, creating clouds of steam, hot water and molten splatter. The USGS Volcanoes division shared this footage of lava entering the ocean, creating “littoral explosions,” which throw spatter (fragments of molten lava) and pieces of solidified glassy lava high into the air. https://www.facebook.com/USGSVolcanoes/videos/2061133183915232/ https://www.facebook.com/USGSVolcanoes/videos/2061055213923029/
