Americans React to Biden Health Care Claim

don tran
Outrage erupted on Twitter during the presidential debate, after Democratic nominee Joe Biden claimed that no one lost their private health insurance under Obamacare. The comment came after President Donald Trump claimed that Biden's healthcare plan would eliminate private insurance. Joe Biden: “Not one single person with private insurance will lose their insurance under my plan, nor did they under Obamacare.” Immediately, many Americans took to Twitter to say they had lost their health insurance. This twitter user said: “My entire Twitter feed right now is people saying they lost their health insurance under Obamacare.” Talk show host Dana(laash) tweeted: “Joe Biden is lying. My family is one of millions that lost our health insurance because of Obamacare.” The comment section was full of stories from people who lost their insurance. Or who had to give it up because it became too expensive. A former police officer retweeted a post from a woman who said she lost her health insurance. He said that before Obamacare, he was paying $600 a month to cover him and his wife. Now he is paying $2,500 a month. A RAND Corporation study conducted in 2015 estimated that 5.9 million Americans lost their insurance plans due to Obamacare rules and regulations. During his time as president, Barack Obama faced heavy criticism for falsely telling Americans that if "you like your plan, you can keep your plan." Politifact rated Obama's promise "lie of the year" in 2013. After Obamacare went into effect, health insurance costs also became too expensive for many Americans. This left many people with no option but to give up their healthcare. This is a consequence of Obamacare's government assistance for those who had pre-existing health conditions, and low incomes. Those who are healthy and who don’t qualify for financial aid have to make up the costs of the subsidised care. Economics Professor Pavel Yakovloov explains why: “You have to pass on those higher costs to the rest of society in terms of higher premiums, and this creates this vicious cycle of relatively healthy individuals, dropping out of the insurance market because they find premiums are just uneconomical for their level of income and risk.” Obamacare did provide health insurance to many Americans who couldn’t afford health insurance or had pre-existing health conditions. Though the Trump administration has struck down the mandate on health insurance, the rising costs of insurance caused by Obamacare has not been resolved.
